Awareness of how to reduce chances of colorectal cancer

Colon cancer is a malignant tumor that grows in the lining of the large intestine and rectum. It can affect anyone, but its frequency increases with age, especially after 50 years old, and in people who have polyps or diverticula, constipation, and a family history of colorectal cancer.

Colon cancer results from non-malignant tumors such as diverticula or adenomatous polyps, which over time change their cellular composition and become malignant lesions when associated with risk factors such as ulcerative colitis or Chron's Disease.

Knowing that colon cancer comes from benign lesions, prevention is based on avoiding these mild lesions. Both polyps and diverticula develop because of important dietary factors and changes in our digestive tract's biological environment.

For years we have heard that eating vegetables, drinking water, and exercising is the key to a healthy life, and it is no lie. The cornerstones of colon cancer prevention are eating fruits and vegetables, reducing alcohol consumption, not smoking, and controlling weight. 1

Studies have shown that when we do cardiovascular exercise at least three times a week and for at least 30 minutes, we keep our body fit and out of the dark world of sedentarism.

There is a close association between physical exercise and colon cancer. Researchers at the JAMA Internal Medicine showed that physical activity during free time reduced colon cancer risk and ten other types of cancer by 20% . 2

Something quite interesting that is still under investigation is curcumin consumption as an anti-cancer agent, mainly in preventing colon cancer. The basis for this lies in the fact that curcumin has bioactive anti-cancer components such as IND-4, FLLL, GO-Y030, and C086, which are effective against cancer cell-lines in the colonic wall. 3

The effect of curcumin on the colonic wall has been described as an anti-inflammatory, decreasing tumor markers' proliferation and preventing cell death.

Curcumin is currently recommended for consumption in food to be both a preventive and curative tool in colon cancer.
